Rachel Simon, who wrote the memoir Riding The Bus With My Sister, will be in Seattle this week as part of a pre-release tour for her upcoming novel. She will be coming to the offices of The Arc of King County from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM the morning of Thurs., January 27, and would love to meet you at a free, informal gathering.
You might remember that Rachel is a sibling whose sister Beth has an intellectual disability, and who loves riding city buses. Rachel's book about their relationship was a national bestseller and was turned into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, starring Rosie O'Donnell as Beth and Andie MacDowell as Rachel.
Rachel's new book, which will hit the shelves on May 4, 2011, is The Story of Beautiful Girl. It focuses on two adults with disabilities who escape from an institution in 1968. Attached is a flyer that describes the book in more detail. You can also read the first chapter of the book, view a short video, and pre-order a copy at Rachel's website, www.rachelsimon.com.
At Rachel's visit to The Arc of King County, she will read a little from The Story of Beautiful Girl. She will also talk about how the book grew out of her experiences meeting self-advocates and family members after the publication of Riding The Bus With My Sister. In addition, she would love to hear your story about your own life.
If you have a copy of Riding The Bus With My Sister that you'd like Rachel to sign, please bring it with you. However, since The Story of Beautiful Girl won't be out for another four months, you will not be able to get a copy of that book at this gathering.
We hope to see you, and anyone you know who might be interested, at this event.
